Why is water quality important?
Living water makes you feel alive.
The more the water you have inside you is alive, the more alive you feel. Drinking living water is the best possible thing you can do, and this is something the experts seem to agree on and is what Elwin himself has found in his own experience. Drinking living water tends to make you be more present; even just being near living water can make us feel more present and connected. This may sound a bit fringe to those more in the mainstream, but do look into this and at least realise that not all water is equal in terms of the effect it has on us. As always though, Elwin urges you not to worry about whether you believe him or not, just try his recommendations for yourself and see what happens.
What first alerted Elwin to the importance of water quality was the people who said, ‘I hate drinking water!’ He found this difficult to understand – how can anyone hate drinking water? On further investigation, it always turned out they were drinking it straight from the tap or at best, tap water put through a jug filter. Tap water is full of toxic substances that deplete your vitality. If you have a lot of vitality then you could get away with drinking it sometimes, because your body will have the resources to deal with it and get some use from it, but even then, do you really want to be using up your body’s vitality to filter poisons out of your water? If your vitality is already severely depleted and your health is poor, it’s even more important to drink the best water possible so as to spare your body the taxing and de-energising work of coping with the toxins in bad water.
This truly came home to Elwin during a period when he was gung-ho about having only raw vegan food but still drinking tap water, and still struggling with health issues. He used to hate buying water and considered it a pretentious thing to do. A colleague told him he’d be better off drinking pure spring water and eating fast food burgers every day than eating 100% raw vegan food and drinking tap water. While Elwin doesn’t make any claims as to the truth or otherwise of that statement, it does make the point that quality of water is of crucial importance. How much of your body is water? Young people’s bodies can be up to 85%, or the body of a very old person can be as little as 55%. The process of aging is the process of dehydrating. If a person ‘ages well’ it means they’re dehydrating very slowly, and vice versa. Some dehydration is, as far as we currently know, inevitable in the aging process but we want to minimise it as far as possible.
Here’s the thing; your body is not equally happy to be given all types of water, because it can hydrate the cells so much more easily with living spring water. So the best is best not just for high energy but also for your appearance and for your rate of aging.
What is good quality water?
Fresh, pure spring
No water – Worst
Fresh pure spring water – fresh means you collect it (or have it collected) from a spring. Pure means that spring water has been reliably tested. Preferably the water also has a low TDS count (total dissolved solids) ie it has a low quantity of inorganic minerals dissolved in it because they can be hard work for your organs to process. The purest water is glacial water.
At this point you may be saying, ‘But Elwin, I don’t even know if there are any springs around here and I’m certainly not near a glacier…’ You can usually find a spring near you, though there are some places where this isn’t possible. In the US and Canada, springs tend to be easier to find and they are often nicely plumbed and tested too. In Europe this is less often the case but you can still find some except in countries like the Netherlands. In Portugal there seem to be loads of good quality, tested springs. Pure spring water – we can buy bottled spring water. Glass bottles are ideal but may not always be available. Make sure it is good spring water and not simply bottled filtered tap water.
Filtered well water – if you have access to a well and can filter it properly, then this can be high quality water, though not as alive as spring water.
Well-filtered water – this is water (probably tap water) that has been put through an advanced filtering system
Alkaline water – some advanced filtering systems can alkalise water. Alkaline water is good for helping to acids out of the body but is less useful for hydration purposes. Elwin has noticed that people who drink only alkaline water have one of two things happen; either they become insatiably thirsty and drink more and more to feel satisfied, or they don’t want to drink at all.
Distilled water – like alkaline water this is good for cleansing but not good for hydrating. It’s water that has been boiled and condensed to remove all impurities, so it’s certainly pure but it is also completely dead. Some people believe you can add vitality back in with crystals and salt and so on – it’s your decision if that seems to suit you. But in Elwin’s experience, distilled water is dehydrating and tends to be very acidic, around Ph 5 usually.
Tap water – nasty stuff, though it does depend on where you are. It’s likely to contain fluoride, chlorine, PCBs, hormone residues and heavy metals, which are all toxic. As previously mentioned, it might not do you much harm if you already have high levels of vitality but why would you want to use your body as a filter for grotty water? Water should be flushing toxins out of your body, not putting more in. Some tap water is better, but it’s still toxic to some extent unless you are one of the few who get spring water through the tap. For most of us, it will be waste water that has been through a water treatment plant, but it will be completely dead and is unlikely to have had all of the contaminants removed and will have had some added eg chlorine.
When deciding what water to get, aim as high on this scale as you can. If there’s a spring near you but you’re too busy to go and collect it yourself, could you employ someone to go and collect it for you? If you eat, if you obtain food, then you can do the same for good quality water. Remember that around 70% of your body is water, and the quality of that water is determined by the quality of the water you drink.
No water – not everyone would agree that tap water is better than no water at all but Elwin believes that, as bad it is to take in water that is dead and laden with toxins, it’s better than having no water at all.
Do your best.
Use your results focus, use your presence, use your decision making ability, let your actions flow from your new identity and standards, and make this happen. Remember this isn’t a time for judgement and self-recrimination, it’s just something for you to do your best on, and your best will be good enough for wherever you are in your journey at the time. So whichever point you reach on the water scale, whatever you can manage, if it’s the best you can do for now, then be at peace with that. There’s nothing worse for your energy than to be in conflict with yourself. If you focus on getting the best water, then sooner or later the opportunity to do that will come up. For now, just do your best and be happy with your choice.
