Well, maybe it is time to examine your shen energy, or your spiritual energy– your inner light.
In all cultures across the world (including our own though we are disconnected from this), it has always been acknowledged that it’s possible for someone’s spirit to get sick. When someone gets depressed and feels life isn’t worth living, or is damaged and perhaps abusive to others, it’s obvious that their spirit is sick. They are not in harmony with the world or themselves. They seem to hate themselves and be on a self-destructive path, hurting themselves and those around them.
Conversely, If your spirit is strong, you’ll feel good about life and yourself, and you’ll feel good about other people. Someone with high shen will always feel good doing what is right for themselves, others and the world.
If you find yourself suffering from low shen, you may consider using the top taoist shen herbs reishi, polygala and albizzia as teas to replenish your shen energy.
These three reflect the three centres of shen energy. Reishi is about being centred, seeing things from a greater perspective and being connected to the world around you. I remember hearing someone in an interview say that they wish they could put reishi in the drinking water! Everyone can benefit from reishi.
Polygala’s nickname is ‘the will strengthener’ – not willpower or forcing yourself to do something, but the internal push to do something you judge yourself to be right (not something someone else tells you is right) and feel good about doing it. At present you may be disconnected from that internal compass, which is why some need a little guidance initially. Eventually you will get back to that place where you know what is right for you.
One of the things that block us from our internal compass is when we suffer trauma, heartbreak or hurt and resentment, all of that stuff that accumulates in our heart and our body. Albizzia is a powerful remedy to help heal heartbreak and strengthen the heart.
Tree mushrooms are also known as the medicinal mushrooms or the noble mushrooms, and all of them are good. There is chaga from northern Europe and America, agaricus from Brazil, cordyceps which is more of a jing herb but is also shen, maitake and shiitake, the latter being available for culinary use.
With tree mushrooms generally, the more, the better. This is especially true if you feel you are not living up in any way to that high shen, high spirited individual. You can have a lot. You can have several teaspoons a day of reishi or polygala or albizzia.
As always, an easy way to start getting results is to use a good blend of herbs. My favourite shen blend is Lion Heart Herbs’ Serenity.
If you don’t know where to start, this is a good way to begin. Serenity blend heals the heart, strengthening you, helping you to be centred and to feel good about life and yourself, feeling good about doing what’s right as we saw earlier. Reishi, polygala and albizzia are all ingredients of Serenity.
I recommend high amounts of shen herbs just because for most people, they’re so necessary and because these herbs are especially safe. Start with the recommended dosage but if you feel good on it and have no problems with it, then try having much larger amounts for at least a month or two until you get to that place of feeling awesome about yourself and other people and the world.
