Making Homemade Elderberry Syrup to Improve Overall Health

downloadIt is that time of the year again. The time when we see news articles, signs plastered across pharmacy walls, and billboards announcing cold and flu season is upon us. If you are among those who avoid flu shots, rest assured, there is a natural alternative. And it is easy and inexpensive to make at home.

Elderberry syrup has been used for centuries throughout Europe, North America and into central Asia to boost immune health and has been shown to prevent flu and speed recovery in those who have the flu.

Black elderberries (sambucus nigra) contain high levels of A, B, and C vitamins and stimulate the immune system. There are several syrups available ready made on the market but they tend to be very expensive. Making it on your own is not only economical, it is also very easy and requires just a few ingredients and minimal active time.

An added bonus is if you like the taste of berries, you will find it delicious as well as healthy.

You will need:

  • ⅔ cup black elderberries (purchase online from a reputable source. Be sure it is sambucus nigra and food grade)
  • 3.5 cups filtered water
  • 2 Tbsp fresh ginger root
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • ½ tsp cloves
  • 1 cup raw honey (preferably local)


  1. Pour water into a large pot.
  2. Add elderberries, ginger, cinnamon and cloves. (NOT the honey at this time)
  3. Bring to a boil, then cover, and reduce to a simmer for around 45 minutes. You want the liquid to reduce by about half.
  4. Strain ingredients through a metal sieve or cheesecloth discarding the solids.
  5. Allow the liquid to cool to 110 F.
  6. Add the honey (at this temp the honey will remain raw and all of the health benefits will be retained) and whisk until well combined.
  7. Pour into a glass container or canning jar, and refrigerate.

Ta Da! You just made your very own elderberry syrup! Store in the refrigerator and take daily to boost your immune system. Standard dosage is ½ – 1 tsp for kids per day and ½ – 1 Tbsp for adults .

If the flu does strike, take the normal dosage every 2-3 hours instead of once daily until symptoms disappear.
