Licorice – For harmony, better digestion and recovery from stress

licorice2“It is not stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it” –Hans Selye

You have probably heard of licorice but as a sweet rather than a Chinese herb.  Licorice root is around 500 times sweeter than sugar cane but it has a lot more going for it than just sweetness.

Licorice is a spleen tonic which means it helps improve digestion.  It also clears heat especially in the lungs so if you have a dry cough this herb will help relieve that.  It’s an adrenal gland tonic so if your adrenal glands have been taxed and overworked for a long time, licorice will help to strengthen them.

If licorice has all of these benefits, can you have a lot of it every day?  No, because it does have a couple of drawbacks; large quantities can raise your blood pressure so if your blood pressure is already high, you need to take special care with dosage.  It can also interact with certain medications.

What I recommend with licorice is to have very small dosages as part of a blend.  Licorice not only harmonises all of the channels and meridians in your body, it also harmonises the function of other herbs, making them work smoothly together.  This is one of its main functions in Chinese medicine.  It’s the ultimate diplomatic herb!  This is why it is found in many herb formulations.  It is present in small amounts in all of the Lion Heart Herb formulas.  Licorice is a detoxifying herb so there is twice as much in the Cleanse formula as there is in the other formulas.

Keep the dosage of licorice small and limit its use to making other herbs work better together in combination.  For instance if you wanted to try white atractylodes with astragalus and codonopsis as a digestive tonic blend, then it’s a good idea to put a small amount of licorice in there, say a quarter of the amount of any of the main herbs.  It will not only make the blend taste better but will make those herbs work even better together.
