What is the Ideal Human Diet…and does it even exist?

The ‘Perfect Diet’..is there such a thing?

On coaching calls, I often get asked some version of the question:

‘What do you think of {insert latest diet here}?’

or, simply:

‘I’m so confused about what I should eat. Everyone seems to say something different…and most of it is contradictory. What do you recommend?’

It’s an important question, after all, you HAVE to eat, so it’s not something you can wait to work out…you need Clarity now.

My intent with this Video is to help provide some Clarity:

See, the Truth about ‘what to Eat’ is that it’s not simplistic. As always, real Truth is complex, and context dependent.

Most ‘Gurus’ and teachers out there know that…but they also know many people have an ‘appetite’ for simple, black and white answers.

Dogma (like: ‘this is the one and only right diet…for everyone’) is very appealing, and great…short term. It makes us feel safe and secure that we know what’s going on, and what to do.

There’s only one problem with dogmatic, over simplistic approaches to Health: they Don’t Work. OK, sometimes they will give you some Results short term. But Long Term, they rarely work.

The complicated, Context-Dependent Truth, while less comforting, is the real path to True, Long Term Success.

I see ‘one size fits all’ Diet Plans as equivalent to ‘Get rich quick’ schemes. They’re BS.

Anyway, enough ranting.

If you enjoyed this…Good News:

It’s also my intent to start releasing one of these quick, no nonsense trainings a week, answering the questions that YOU have about Health.

If you like it, or have a question of your own you’d like me to answer, please post under the Video, and, (assuming it’s not a medical issue), I’ll make sure to make a video answering your question for one of these weekly videos.

Sound Good?

Awesome. 🙂

I look forward to seeing your questions and feedback, Just Post them Below, and I’ll see you next week.

Great insights, Elwin. What’s important to realize is the source of this very question. Asking what the ideal diet is stems from a need for certainty about one’s health, well-being and often basic survival, all of which are our most fundamental needs. People who ask this question, approach the meeting of these, and other needs from a dietary standpoint, often because they could meet the above mentioned needs, even if only for the time being, through a unique nutritional approach. One, or more of those very important needs were unmet in those people, often chronically, and they had to find certainty that those critically important elements of their lives are safely and consistently taken care of by nutritional means that had already proven useful for them earlier, or at least they had been convinced by a dietary authority figure that they were going to be sorted. Because of the numerous needs that are being met by a nutritional approach that is working for an individual in a given situation, including increased amounts of energy and better mood that helps them to meet their need for better relationships and higher self-esteem, their approach to nutrition will become a part of their identity which they are going to protect and try to carve in stone so that its existence is made eternal and its value is made superior. This is accompanied with a child-like regression in behaviour where the meeting of these needs become dependent on the ‘parent’, that in this case is the chosen diet, instead of on one’s capacity to assess his or her situation realistically and adapt maturely and flexibly with the dietary and other behavioural changes that the changing situation demands. These deep psychological mechanics will remain hidden often permanently unless an integration of the denied aspects of reality, dietarily and otherwise, begins to happen. This is not about diet; this is about becoming more of our true, unlimited selves.

Thanks Elwin, great insights as ever and I really like these shorter video sessions which work well for me. My journey has been similar to some of your other commenters, ie being very dogmatic when I stumbled across the raw/vegan diet 9 years ago; going through a bit of a hippy (trust your body) phase, but becoming much more balanced and open to new ideas as time has passed and my knowledge and experience has grown. I like your point also about counting chemicals (instead of calories) and am wondering if you are aware of any tool or apps that can assist time-poor people navigate the isles? I’ll do some research myself too. Cheers, and thanks for all of your help.

Thanks Lawrence! In terms of counting chemicals, I don’t know of an app for that, but that would be good, right? Just scan the barcode with your iphone, and if there’s any chemical rubbish in there, it just gives you a skull and crossbone symbol, and says something like ‘put it back on the shelf and back away’ 😉
I also don’t have time for a lot of messing around, so I tend to just stick to whole, natural things, and if I do get something in a jar, packet, tin or whatever, I’ll just look through it carefully once (just takes a few seconds) and then, if there’s nothing ‘bad’ in there, I’ll file it in my head as a ‘don’t need to check again’ item.
