Many people recognise that the heart is the centre of conscience, of love, of connection with the rest of the world, and of spirit. The heart carries vulnerability, where you open up to others but also carries your courage, where you do what’s right no matter what.
The liver is the organ that physically filters out all of the bad stuff in your system that can’t be dealt with anywhere else. From a Taoist perspective, it does the same thing on a subtle psychic level. It deals with negative influences. So in a way it’s the heart’s job to say ‘yes’ to the world and to open up, and it’s the liver’s job to say ‘no’ and put up boundaries to that which is sick or damaging.
Shen herbs tonify our spirit, helping us to feel good about life and about ourselves.
In all cultures across the world (including our own though we are disconnected from this), it has always been acknowledged that it’s possible for someone’s spirit to get sick. When someone gets depressed and feels life isn’t worth living, or is damaged and perhaps abusive to others, it’s obvious that their spirit is sick. They are not in harmony with the world or themselves. They seem to hate themselves and be on a self-destructive path, hurting themselves and those around them. This is not to judge such a person, this is a diagnosis or evaluation.
If a person’s spirit is sick for most of their life, it may come from a family inheritance. There is no blame here, just the recognition that this can happen. If your spirit is strong, you’ll feel good about life and yourself, and you’ll feel good about other people.
Someone with high shen will always feel good doing what is right for themselves, others and the world.
You can judge the level of your shen energy by considering this; someone with high shen doesn’t just do the right thing, they feel good doing the right thing, and this applies to themselves, others and the world. All three of those things are in there for a good reason. Someone who is a martyr, sacrificing themselves for the good of others and the world are suffering, does not have high shen. More obviously, someone who only does what is for their own benefit while being irresponsible towards others and the world, does not have high shen.
Herbs are not the only things that can help with this, of course. Shen is also about mindset. Being present, focusing on results, being aware of your emotions, creating an identity that serves your highest self, your spirit; all of that is shen work. The aim is to help you feel good about yourself, making you feel good about the world, and the relationship you have with the world.
Taoist shen herbs encourage that process, making it easier for you to be that strong-spirited individual, sometimes even kick-starting the process. Someone may be hearing the message and the call to their spirit but struggle to act on it, instead they keep procrastinating and making excuses. But if they can drink a cup of tea, that may be enough to get them into gear and and help them feel more emotionally balanced.
