Breathe – 7 Steps to Proper Breathing and Increased Everyday Energy

blue-sky-1426291-m“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.” — Thich Nhat Hanh

In the Taoist tradition there are three types of energy-

Chi – everyday energy

Jing – reserve or adaptive energy

Shen – spiritual or integrity energy

Chi is the everyday energy you need to think, move, act and get through the day. Chi makes us feel good about life.  Our everyday energy, or chi,  comes from what you digest and what you breathe.  Breathing is the primary source of energy.  The quality of the air you breathe and the way you breathe has a lot more to do with your health than anything you consume.

We all tend to breathe from the chest because of accumulated tension in the body but we need to breathe from the belly, through the nose for health and energy.  The air doesn’t just contain oxygen and nitrogen, it contains chi.  We can’t measure it yet but it’s there.  It’s transformative to your energy levels.  It’s fundamental and there is no substitute.

I hope you find these steps simple and easy to apply to your everyday life. Remember, practice makes perfect, so set aside time each day to practice proper breathing and before you know it, you will be increasing your chi without even thinking about it!

Step 1:  Lay on the floor. Really.

Step 2:  Relax. Let your feet fall to the sides. Unclench your hands and relax them with palms upward. Put some slack in your jaw and close your eyes. Breath freely.

Step 3:  Place your right hand on your chest and your left hand on your abdomen.

Step 4:  Slowly breath in and out through your nose. Notice how your hands move in relation to each other. You want your left hand to move higher than your right hand. Your abdomen should be doing most of the work and your chest should move only very slightly.

Step 5:  Notice how your abdomen moves. With each breathe, breath into the front, sides and back of your abdomen. Yes, even your back should move slightly.

Step 6:   As you get better at breathing with your abdomen, move on to placing your tongue on the top of your mouth, just behind your teeth. Imagine you are saying the word ‘love,’ notice where your tongue is located at the beginning of the word. That is the correct placement which allows your chi to circulate through your body.

Step 7:  Practice your technique. Set aside 2 five minute sessions each day to practice proper breathing. Not only will you improve your breathing technique, it is possible you will begin to breath properly in your day to day life without giving it a thought.

It is my hope that with these 7 steps you will begin to breathe properly and increase your chi, or everyday energy, to improve the quality of your life!
