Have you noticed that many foods in the grocery store these days are labeled as having been made with natural sea salt? If it is being advertised, it must be better right? There is a great deal of conflicting information available about whether or not regular table salt and natural sea salt effect the body in the same way. I hope to clear that up for you now.
For humans, salt is as essential as water. We can perish from too little of it as we can of thirst. Salt regulates the exchange of water between our cells and their surrounding fluids and is an essential component of human diets. We need to elements of sodium, potassium, and calcium in almost the same proportions as the oceans.
Sea salt is obtained directly through the evaporation of seawater. It is unprocessed and therefore retains trace levels of minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium and other nutrients. Because it is essentially seawater with the water evaporated away, it contains the same minerals as found in the ocean, and in similar proportions.
Table salt, on the other hand, is mined from ancient salt deposits and then processed to give it a fine texture. In addition, it is bleached which removes many of sea salt’s naturally occurring trace elements which is why iodine has to be added. The processing and bleaching process renders table salt toxic.
There are many articles that state that natural sea salt and table salt are equal in their impact on the human body because they both contain roughly the same amounts of sodium. This is true, however, natural sea salt retains minerals other than sodium that our bodies need and, it is not rendered toxic and unrecognizable to our bodies through processing.
Pure unadulterated salt has been consumed by humans for centuries. Over the past few decades, industrially processed salt has taken over in our cuisine and in processed foods. This is the type of salt sodium sensitive types should restrict. Especially because those processed foods are nutritionally empty and full of toxic ingredients.
Nine Health Benefits of Unrefined Sea Salt
1. It helps stabilize and regulate heartbeats, thanks to its magnesium and sodium content.
2. Sodium is essential for proper muscular function.
3. It helps minimize the effects of stress by maintaining proper hormone levels in the brain.
4. It helps the body hold water sufficiently for proper cell hydration.
5. It helps remove cellular acidity.
6. It in absorbed in bone matter and strengthens them, helping to prevent osteoporosis.
7. Sea salt provides iodine in a natural setting, making it easier for your thyroid to absorb it.
8. It tastes better.
9. It is more fun. Try all the different colors of sea salt; pink Himalayan, black or red Hawaiian, or gray French salts are all fun to see and each has a slightly different taste.
Remember: Avoid overdoing a good thing! Moderate use of sea salt is recommended and be sure to balance consumption with an appropriate amount of water.
